SDR Sponsors SCEMA Workshop

Southern Disaster Recovery is a proud sponsor of the 2014 South Carolina Emergency Management Association Workshop. The event will be held at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, Myrtle Beach, SC from March 4th – 7th, 2014. Speakers from local, state, federal and volunteer agencies will be on hand. SDR will share their experience with disaster events and looks to capture the golf tournament trophy.

Historic Ice Storm Immobilizes Ground, Air Travel in the South

Parts of the Southeast will continue to experience the effects of winter storm PAX tracking up the East Coast. Residents of both North and South Carolina will see more snow, sleet and freezing rain while the rest of the region receives a break from the winter weather.

The event could turn out to be the worst ice storm for parts of the South in more than 10 years.

As of Wednesday evening, the number of flights that had been canceled topped 4,000 with more than 2,000 at Atlanta International Airport alone.

While sleet is hazardous and difficult to remove, freezing rain brings the greatest risk for power outages and travel. The communities that receive between 0.50 and 1.00 inch of freezing rain could face severe and long-lasting problems. Earlier in the week, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal announced a State of Emergency for more than 80 counties in the state ahead of the winter storm. Also, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley issued a state of emergency for the entire state. A state of emergency was in effect for all of the Carolinas and Virginia on Wednesday.
According to Accuweather, The area from near Atlanta to Columbia, S.C., and Fayetteville and Raleigh, N.C., may be ground zero for the ice storm. Some communities may experience great devastation from freezing rain.

Pre-Valentine’s Storm Will Be Biggest of Season

NOAA’s WPC calls it “A PARALYZING ICE STORM…. THE ICE ACCUMULATIONS REMAIN MIND-BOGGLING IF NOT HISTORICAL.” They also call it a “A HIGH SOCIETAL IMPACT WINTER STORM.” The SPIA Ice Index says that 3/4 to 1″ of freezing rain will combine with higher winds in western South Carolina, where the worst conditions will be. Atlanta’s not out of the danger area either. If the forecaster’s predictions turn out to be true, it would be the worst storm that central South Carolina has seen in over 10 years. The storm last month “only” dropped 0.75″ of ice, as did the January 2011 event, while predictions are going as high as 2.5″ of ice this time. The big question is, will it be freezing rain or sleet (the GFS model currently says 2.75″ of freezing rain). Sleet arguably makes (treated) roads and sidewalks worse, but the freezing rain will make for more power outages and downed trees (this area is mostly evergreen pine trees).

Thanks to our friends at The Weather Channel and AccuWeather for their climate insights!

The projected ice accumulation map has changed to show a large area of over 1 inch of ice (mostly freezing rain) in South Carolina and Georgia, with some areas getting over 1.5 inches:
